Answer Engine Optimization Is Not the Same as SEO

Bau Tran ยท 2 September 2026

Search Google for "what is answer engine optimization" today, 2 September 2026, and the top eight results come from Forbes, Reddit, HubSpot, Coursera, PwC, CXL, Siteimprove, and Content Science. Every one of them explains the term well. None of them tells you what actually changes on your website once you act on it, and none of them talks about a real business at all.

Letgro is a digital marketing agency that specializes in AI visibility, helping businesses in the GTA and across Ontario show up when people ask AI platforms for a recommendation.

The short version:

  • AEO and SEO optimize for two different outcomes: a ranked list versus a single answer. Google's own guide to AI search, published 15 May 2026, treats them as related but separate jobs.
  • Ranking well doesn't guarantee being the answer. Our own numbers show the share of AI citations coming from a top-10 Google result has roughly halved in the past year.
  • Generative engine optimization (GEO) and AEO get used almost interchangeably, including on this site. There's a real distinction and it matters less than the industry pretends.
  • The fix isn't a new set of tricks. It's the same site, built to state facts plainly instead of rank documents cleverly.

What does answer engine optimization actually mean?

Answer engine optimization is the practice of making a business easy for an AI system to name as the answer to a question, not just easy for Google to rank for a search term. The target isn't a position on a page. It's being the fact a model repeats when someone asks a real question out loud.

Search engine optimization grew up around a list of ten results, and getting into the top few was the whole game. An AI answer skips the list. It picks one name, or a few, and says them. That rewards different things: an exact fact stated plainly, a claim with a source attached, a business that resolves to one clear entity instead of three inconsistent listings across the web.

Is AEO the same thing as SEO?

No, though the two share a foundation. Both need a site that loads fast, gets crawled, and states things accurately. Past that they split: SEO ranks a document against a search term. AEO decides whether a fact gets repeated at all.

SEO AEO
What it optimizes for A ranking position Being named as the answer
Unit that gets judged The whole page A single passage or fact
What wins Relevance, backlinks, page experience Accuracy, named sources, a consistent entity
How you'd know it worked Position tracking, click-through rate Whether an AI names you when asked directly

Our team tested this gap directly in the GTA. One company ranked first on Google for its exact service and city, and still never got named once when an AI assistant was asked who to call. You can win the ranking and lose the answer. That gap is the entire reason AEO exists as its own discipline.

What is generative engine optimization, and is it different from AEO?

Barely, and the industry hasn't settled the line. AEO usually covers any system built to return a direct answer, including Google's featured snippets and voice search. GEO is the narrower term for optimizing specifically for generative AI: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Overviews. In practice almost everyone, this site included, treats the two as synonyms.

That's worth admitting rather than dressing up. Nobody has published a definition sharp enough to separate them cleanly, and inventing one here for the sake of a tidy answer wouldn't be honest. What matters more than the label is the mechanism underneath both: a retrieval system pulling one fact from your site and deciding whether to say it out loud.

Does showing up in Google's map pack count as AEO?

No, and mixing the two up costs businesses real effort. The map pack is Google's own local ranking system, built the same way ordinary search results are. SOCi's 2026 Local Visibility Index scanned more than 350,000 business locations and found Google's map pack surfaced a business 35.9% of the time. ChatGPT surfaced one just 1.2% of the time. Our full platform breakdown has the numbers for Gemini and Perplexity too.

You can dominate the map pack in your own city and still never get named by ChatGPT. The two systems don't share a ranking method, so doing well in one tells you very little about the other.

What actually changes on your site if you optimize for AEO instead of SEO?

Three things, and none of them touch your rankings. You state facts instead of implying them: a licence number, a year founded, a warranty term, written in plain text instead of buried in a PDF. You name your business the same way everywhere, so a model has one entity to trust instead of three inconsistent listings. And you earn a mention somewhere that isn't your own site, because mentions predict AI visibility about three times stronger than backlinks do.

None of this replaces SEO. Google is explicit that ranking still matters and that AI-specific rewriting isn't required. AEO adds a second, separate job on top of SEO. It doesn't swap one for the other.

The definition matters less than the habit underneath it: say the true, specific thing in plain text, and say it the same way everywhere. That's the whole discipline, whatever the industry decides to call it next year.
