How to fix a wrong Google Business Profile location before it costs you the map pack

Bau Tran ยท 10 September 2026

Our own Google Business Profile ranked #1 in Google Search for "digital marketing near me" on 3 September 2026. Three people saw it.

Letgro is a digital marketing agency that specializes in AI visibility, helping businesses in the GTA and across Ontario show up when people ask AI platforms for a recommendation.

The reason wasn't a weak keyword. Google had pinned our service area in Algoma District, 743 kilometres north of our Mississauga office. Almost nobody up there searches for a marketing agency.

The short version:

  • A Google Business Profile's service area can silently place your business hundreds of kilometres from where you actually work, and the settings page never tells you it happened.
  • We ranked #1 for a term with three searches a month, and position 41 for "brampton local seo," the term that actually mattered. Ranking #1 for the wrong place is worse than not ranking at all. It looks like success.
  • Google's map pack is the highest-visibility local channel there is. A wrong pin can quietly cut you out of it, and nothing in the dashboard warns you.
  • The fix is specific cities, not a province. We replaced "Ontario" with 10 named GTA cities on 10 September 2026.

Why is Google saying I'm in a different location?

A Google Business Profile's service area accepts an entire province as a valid entry. Google then uses that province's centre point to decide where your business shows up in Search and Maps. Type "Ontario," and the centre point lands near Algoma District, hundreds of kilometres from any city you actually serve. Nobody chose that point. The dropdown did.

The same failure shows up elsewhere. Search Engine Land reported in March 2026 that Google's local ranking system falls back to a city centroid whenever it can't get a confident address match, the same broken pattern, just triggered here by a province instead of a bad address.

This isn't a rare misclick. A province sits right there in the list next to your actual cities, and it looks like the safer, broader choice. It's the opposite. The bigger the area you claim, the further the centre point drifts from anywhere you do business.

How do you actually check where Google Business Profile thinks you are?

Not by reading the settings page. It shows the city names you typed, correctly, even when the location Google calculated from them is wrong. The only view that matches what Google is actually using to rank you is the pin itself.

What you check What it tells you
Service area list in the GBP dashboard The cities you typed. Not where Google placed you.
Most third-party reporting tools Often can't read this field at all, and return blank rather than flagging a problem.
The pin on Google Maps, searched by business name The real coordinates your local rankings are calculated from.
Search Console position data The symptom. A #1 position on a near-zero-volume term is a warning, not a win.

Search your business name on Google Maps and read the coordinates under the pin. That number, not the city list in your dashboard, is the ground truth.

What does a wrong pin actually cost you?

Google's map pack shows up in 35.9% of local searches, the highest share of any channel SOCi measured across 350,000+ locations in its 2026 Local Visibility Index. A pin nobody can verify decides whether you even show up there.

Verification badges and review counts get all the attention in every GBP checklist we've read. Service area doesn't, even though it's arguably the one setting most likely to place a business provinces from where it operates. No dashboard warns you. No badge turns red. The profile just quietly stops showing up where it matters, and keeps showing up where it doesn't.

We checked our own profile in the dashboard before we found this. It said "Ontario," correctly, exactly as we'd typed it. Correct as typed and correct as calculated are two different claims. Only one of them is visible to you.

How do you fix a wrong Google Business Profile location?

Delete the province-level entry. Rebuild the service area with the real cities you serve, added one at a time. If you don't have a public storefront, set the profile to a service-area business with no address shown, so nothing exposes a location you don't want public.

Save it, then wait. Google can take days to weeks to redo the math and re-crawl the fix. We made this change on 10 September 2026. Search Console won't have enough data to say whether it worked until the next full crawl finishes, around 1 October. We'll report the real number then, not a guess now.

This is the kind of setting our SEO work checks first, before anything else, because nothing built on top of a business profile matters if Google has it aimed at the wrong city.

Search your own business name on Google Maps right now. Read the coordinates under the pin, not the city name in your settings. If they don't match where you actually work, you have the same bug we did.
